When you arrive in Boston, you are arriving in a city that is approaching four hundred years old. As such it has lots of activities and attractions to offer to its visitors, both modern ones and those that have existed for a long time.

But there is a lot more to Boston than meets the eye and despite the fact that its a city, it is also home to lots of animals. From islands to zoos, there is plenty here to pique your interest.

The Franklin Park Zoo in Boston has plenty of animals of all descriptions you can take the whole family to see. One of the key features of this zoo is that it has painstakingly recreated different regions of the world for their animals to live in and also for you to experience.

Apparently the gorillas are very popular at the zoo, and you will find them in the tropical section. Elsewhere there is an African section which has lions you can get up close to with just a pane of glass between you and them. Not all the animals live apart from each other either. Some will share the same space with others, just as they would if they were living in the wild. This aspect of the zoo makes a visit quite fascinating.

If you would rather see animals in the wild you can do that too in Boston. Just head for Boston Harbour and book yourself onto one of the cruises that depart from there on a regular basis. This will give you the opportunity to go whale watching.

You may also see dolphins in the wild if you give this trip a go, and while nothing is guaranteed the odds of seeing both species are very good indeed.

Back at Central Wharf in Boston you can see more aquatic mammals by going to the New England Aquarium. Everything from anacondas to sharks is on display here, and if you have ever wanted to say hi to a turtle named Myrtle, this is your chance!

Finally why not head over to one of Bostons islands for the day? Not everyone realises that there are thirty four islands very close to Boston itself, and this gives you a whole new world to explore during a trip to the city.

Grape Island is best for viewing all kinds of different wildlife. If you have a good camera with a zoom lens and some binoculars, you can look forward to an active days walking and a chance to see plenty of different birds.

You wont be far from the action regardless of which of the many Boston hotels you decide to stay in. So make sure you get to see all of the above sights it makes for a fascinating trip to this old American city.

If youre never yet been to Boston, youll soon see that it has plenty going for it. Situated to the east of New York it nestles on the eastern coastline of America. And it has come a long way since it first came into being back in the 17th century.

The city itself is fairly compact, which makes walking around from place to place quite feasible. Some companies take full advantage of this by creating a number of different walking tours that are popular with tourists.

Not only will a walking tour show you where all the main landmarks of the city are, it will also give you an amazing insight into Bostons past. Depending on the type of tour you select, you will get a unique experience which may change your view of Boston forever. You will certainly learn a lot more about it.

But while Boston is good for walking, you can also try out the T. This is the citys subway, and it is colour coded with each separate line taking a different colour. Once you get used to how this works it provides a quick and easy way to get to different parts of the city.

Most cities have some kind of guided bus tour, and Boston is no exception. They are often known as Beantown Trolley Tours Beantown is actually one of the many nicknames people have for the city.

Giving this tour a try has plenty of benefits too. For starters there is a single price to pay which enables you to use the trolley tour all day long. The tours are designed to take in many of the most famous and much loved sights in Boston, so you can visit places such as Charlestown by getting off at the appropriate stop. Once you have finished its simply a case of waiting for the next trolley and hopping back on again to complete the tour.

But there is one other way you can see Boston that gives you a totally different view of the city. If you have never tried a Duck Tour before, you should definitely try it here. These bus type vehicles have the advantage of being able to operate just as well on water as they can on land. Needless to say this means the tour reaches parts that others cant get to! Along with other ways of seeing Boston, this makes your trip even more memorable.

The efficient and tightly packed nature of Bostons streets means that whichever of the Boston hotels you choose to stay in, you wont be far from any of these tours. And since they make the perfect introduction to any stay in the city, what better way could there be to get to know Boston?

The gateway to New England and the historic capital of the east coast, Boston has all the red-brick charm and seasonal beauty you would expect from this colonial city. As one of Americas oldest cities, founded in 1630 by English colonists and achieving city status in 1822, social history and a strong sense of self is everywhere, with proud Bostonians usually all too happy to share their fascinating city with inquisitive guests.

Not only is Boston perhaps Americas most historic city, but it is also the culture hub of New England, and its not hard to see why. Hop on one of the many city tours, like Old Town Trolley Tours of Boston, for an entertaining snapshot of the citys highlights, including Bunker Hill, the USS Constitution (Old Ironside) and the Hancock Tower.

Renowned for many firsts in the worlds of design, medicine and architecture, walking around the city you cant help but notice how proud Boston is of its achievements. The Museum of Science is a hands-on interactive experience which in itself usually takes several visits to get round entirely, and much grand colonial architecture can of course be enjoyed for free on a walk round the city, like the Old South Meeting House, the Paul Revere House and the Federal Quincy Market.

Made up of wide expansive streets that are dotted with reminders of the American Revolution, many quirky and characterful neighbourhoods and green spaces are worth meandering into to get a real feel for the place. Boston Common, near the Federal-style Beacon Hill district, is the oldest public park in the United States and is one of a series of parks surrounding the city, dubbed the Emerald Necklace after the citys strong Irish population. Bostons North End is the oldest residential area in the city, dating right back to 1630 and is today the place to eat, as more than 100 restaurants inhabit the half square-mile quarter, garnering it the nickname Little Italy. For an afternoons shopping, high-end stores and quirky boutiques line Newbury Street and the Back Bay district is where the towering John Hancock Building marks Copely Square; where landmarks like Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library sit side-by-side with the upscale Copley Place shopping plaza.

The reputation of Athens of America is deserved, as Boston is renowned as a college town thanks to Greater Boston being home to more than 100 universities and colleges. This concentrated centre of education is most prominent in Cambridge, which though only a few miles from the heart of Boston, is in fact a city in itself. Hop on the bus over the Charles River Basin and explore the prestigious grounds of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as you follow in the footsteps of alumni such as John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, T.S. Eliot, Matt Damon and Buzz Aldrin. With countless Boston hotels to choose from, and white picket fences of Cape Cod just across the bay, theres plenty to discover.

Adjective-heavy for its monumental past in the quest for democracy, Boston is not only home of the Red Socks but the cradle of freedom and the birthplace of American democracy, what Athens was to Greece. Despite its moderate size this culturally significant town well-deserved its hefty titles due to its rich heritage. Renowned for its architectural wonders and a famed college town, Boston is still very much a pioneer that sets the tone of progress for the rest of the states.
Home to some of the world??s most prestigious universities, Boston was also known by its Puritan ancestors as the ??shining city on a hill? as it was the birthplace of the Sons of Freedom and the site of the War for Independence. Having pushed forward progressive notions such as feminism, transcendentalism and abolitionism, a trip to this magnificent city would be incomplete if one did not traverse along those first steps towards freedom along Boston??s ??Freedom Trail?.
Taking visitors along a 2.5mile stretch of a red-brick walking tour that covers sixteen historic sites related to the American Revolution, the Freedom Trail traces the world??s leading nation??s struggle for independence from Britain. The major sites that are visited on the trail include the The State House, Common, Faneuil Park, Paul Revere House, King??s Chapel and the Site of the Boston Massacre in addition to Benjamin Franklin Statue/Boston Latin School, Granary Burying Ground, the Bunker Hill Monument, Old South Meeting House, Copp’s Hill Burying Ground, Old Corner Book Store ,Old State House, The Constitution and the King??s Chapel Burying Ground.
Some of the tour highlights include the State House which was built in 1798 by designer Charles Bulfinch on what used to be John Hancock’s cow grazing land. Iconic for its gold shaded dome which was first covered in 23 karat gold leaves in 1874 was painted black during the Second World War to shield it from shelling attacks. Sprawled across 6.7 acres of prime parkland the State House is one of the oldest residents of Beacon Hill.
Paul Revere??s house is another must see as it??s the oldest completely intact construct in downtown Boston. Purchased for a little over 53 pounds in 1770, Revere was residing in this country house when he set out on that fateful journey towards Lexington that is immortalized in the Longfellow poem Paul Revere??s Ride. It is also interesting to note that the residence housed Jewish, Italian and Irish immigrants in the 19th century.

As the site of the first key battle of the American Revolutionary War, Bunker Hill saw the American revolutionaries inflict 1000 casualties on the British forces which inspired General Nathanael Greene??s famous words ??I wish I could sell them another hill at the same price?. With the placement of the cornerstone of the monument in 1825 by veteran Marquis De Lafayette, the towering 221 foot high granite obelisk is a testament to the revolutionary spirit of the colonial forces in it??s heyday. The tour also takes you though the sequence of event leading up to the Battle of Bunker Hill while the Bunker Hill Museum is also featured with its collection of artefacts from that red letter day in American history.
Taking a mere two to three hours as a whole the red brick lined route spans two centuries of American history, the Freedom Trail Foundation also provides a number of field trip options for children of all ages which includes interactive elements such as performances , audio tours, trolley tours as well as land and sea tours.

The Langham Boston is conveniently situated and ideal for visitors interested in Boston hotels close to the town??s premier attractions.
